Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Congress fields Rahul Gandhi from Raebareli, Kishori Lal Sharma from Amethi

In a move that brings an end to months of speculation and anticipation, the Congress party has finally revealed its candidates for two of its formidable bastions. Rahul Gandhi's name has been announced to contest from Raebareli, while Kishori Lal Sharma, a staunch loyalist of the Gandhis, will vie for victory in Amethi.

With the final date for filing nomination papers looming on May 3rd, Friday, the political stage is set for a showdown in Raebareli and Amethi, both scheduled to go to polls on May 20th in phase 5 of the elections.

The vacancy in the Raebareli seat arose earlier this year when Sonia Gandhi ascended to the Rajya Sabha. Now, Rahul Gandhi, currently serving as the Member of Parliament for Wayanad in Kerala, is poised to take on the challenge in Raebareli, where his mother Sonia Gandhi triumphed over Dinesh Pratap Singh of the BJP in the 2019 general elections.

Rahul Gandhi's return to the political battleground of Amethi is significant, given its historical significance as a stronghold of the Gandhi family. After representing Amethi for three consecutive terms in the Lok Sabha, Rahul faced a setback in 2019 when he lost to BJP's Smriti Irani. However, he has opted to contest from Raebareli this time, leaving the task of reclaiming Amethi to loyalist Kishori Lal Sharma.

The presence of Sonia Gandhi during Rahul's nomination process and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's support for Kishori Lal Sharma underscore the familial bonds and solidarity within the Congress party.

The delay in announcing candidates for these crucial constituencies had drawn sharp criticism from the BJP, which viewed it as a sign of Congress's alleged waning confidence in its strongholds. However, Rahul Gandhi's assertion last month about abiding by the party leadership's decision indicates a unified front and strategic planning within the Congress ranks.

Sonia Gandhi's long-standing representation of Raebareli, coupled with her previous electoral victories in Amethi, adds a layer of historical continuity to the Congress's campaign in Uttar Pradesh.

In Uttar Pradesh, where the Congress is contesting 17 out of the 80 Lok Sabha seats, its alliance with Akhilesh Yadav's Samajwadi Party, which is contesting 63 seats, further shapes the political landscape and dynamics of the upcoming elections.

As this breaking story unfolds, more information is expected to emerge, offering deeper insights into the strategies, challenges, and aspirations driving the Congress party's electoral campaign in these pivotal constituencies. Stay tuned for updates as the political drama continues to unfold in the heartland of Indian politics.
